Ancien Pensionnaire Du Roi A Rome. Et Grave Sur Acier Par Hibon. Nouvelle Edition. Paris; Garnier Freres, Libraires-Editeurs – 6, Rue Des Saints-Peres, 6. This extremely rare book is the most published architectural treatise in history. No book provides a better background to the theory of the orders. It has remained the standard textbook on architectural orders for three centuries. Though based largely on Vignola's ideas, another book, The American Vignola, is a substantially different treatise than this book. This is the original book "The Five Orders Of Architecture." Giacomo da Vignola b. 01/10/1507, d. 07/07/1573. Giacomo da Vignola was one of the foremost late Renaissance architects in Italy. His real name was Giacomo Barozzi or Barocchio. Appointed (1550) papal architect to Pope Julius III, he spent his later life in Rome, where most of his important works are found. A theoretical and practical architect of the Transition Period between the Renaissance and Baroque styles, was the pupil and successor of Michelangelo. Born Giacomo Barozzi, in 1550 he was made papal architect by Pope Julius III. His The Five Orders of Architecture (first published in 1562), became a standard work on the subject and was translated into many languages. Based upon the work of Marcus Vitruvius Pollio (fl. 1st century CE), it undertook to formulate definite and minute rules for proportioning the classical orders appearing in the buildings of the Romans. This work, which has been in continuous use, has been scrupulously adhered to by many as an almost inviolable authority. After Michelangelo's death, Vignola succeeded him as architect in charge of the work on St. Peter's. His finest productions are the Villa Caprarola, near Viterbo, for Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, and the beautiful Villa Giulia for Pope Julius III in Rome. As designer of the interior (1568) of the Church of the Gesł, in Rome, mother church of the Jesuit order, he developed a plan that greatly influenced ecclesiastical architecture. In the Gesł he combined the longitudinal axis of medieval churches with the central domical scheme of the Renaissance. His designs for the facade of the Gesł were rejected in favor of those by Giacomo della Porta. Vignola is universally known for his treatise (1562) on the five orders of architecture. Based upon the work of Vitruvius, it undertook to formulate definite and minute rules for proportioning the classical orders appearing in the buildings of the Romans. This work, which has been in continuous use, has been scrupulously adhered to by many as an almost inviolable authority. His two great masterpieces are the Villa Farnese at Caprarola and the Jesuits' Chiesa del Gesł in Rome. The three writers who spread the Italian Renaissance style throughout Western Europe are Vignola, Serlio and Palladio. He began in Bologna, supporting himself by painting and making perspective templates for inlay craftsmen. He made a first trip to Rome in 1536 to make measured drawings of Roman temples, with a thought to publish an illustrated Vitruvius. Then Franēois I called him to Fontainebleau, where he spent the ye. Bookseller Inventory # 000984

Book Description: Gibbs * Smith Publisher, Salt Lake City, 1995. Hard Bound. Book Condition: Near Mint. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Mint. Illustrated With Many Photographs, Maps And Illustrations (illustrator). First. Near Mint Condition. Utah - The Right Place The Official Centennial History. By Thomas Alexander. Utah Centennial 1896-1996. A Utah Statehood Centennial Project Of The Utah State Historical Society. Richard W. Sadler – General Editor. Susan A. Whetstone – Photographic Editor. Jay M. Haymond – Project Director. Gibbs * Smith Publisher – Salt Lake City. First Edition. Copyright 1995. Oversize Hardbound Book With A Dust Jacket. Illustrated With Many Photographs, Maps And Illustrations. 487 Pages. From The Dust Jacket Flap: Unbelievable landforms and startling mixtures of peoples – Utah is a state of extremes, paradoxes, and beauty, a state which has been "The Right Place" for so many people. Its rich heritage comes alive in this centennial edition of its history. Written by noted historian Thomas G. Alexander and commissioned by the Utah State Historical Society. Weaving together the stories of the Anasazi; the Spaniards; the Mormons, Protestants, Catholics, Jews, and Greek Orthodox; the athletes, artists, and entertainers – all the famous and not-so-famous people from Utah’s past – Alexander tells a story of determination, creativity, and originality. "The common denominator of these Utahns is neither birthplace, gender, politics, economic position, religion, ethnic background, liberalism, conservatism, nor profession." Alexander writes, "It is, rather, that each chose Utah as their home and that they have made the state a better place for all of us. Like these people, we become Utahns because we love its land and people, and because we have come to understand that it is still ‘The Right Place.’" From The Back Cover: From ancient peoples to contemporary artisans, from religious refugees to gunslinging outlaws, from mountain men to environmental activists – all these people, and millions more, have found Utah to be "The Right Place." In this comprehensive volume, Dr. Thomas G. Alexander, under commission by the Utah State Historical Society, has documented the fascinating history of those who have explored, developed, and changed the forty-fifth state of the Union. With humor and insight, Alexander traces the personalities and events that have shaped Utah, bringing to light little-known facts and raising for discussion often buried issues. His narrative is rich in detail, providing context and perspective to familiar but sometimes misunderstood events, along with fascinating anecdotes to illuminate the times and people. Among other things, Alexander offers a candid look at the displacement of Native Americans by Mormon settlements and the state’s early efforts to tame prostitution in the cities. He provides a new perspective on environmental activism in Utah, including movements as early as the 1890s to improve air quality and limit pollution from smoke. He describes the state’s longstanding promotion of the arts and the decades-old leadership efforts by Utah’s women in education and politics. And he delves into the turn-of-the-century struggles with growth in the state’s urban areas – even describing one Salt Lake City plan to pay children a bounty on rats of ten cents per head (and ten cents per hundred for flies). This definitive history pays tribute to the land and heritage of Utah as the state celebrates its centennial in 1996. This book is in LIKE NEW condition with a dust jacket. It is clean and tight with no marking or underlining. It looks brand new except for the previous owner’s address sticker inside the front cover.
