has been written in
recent years about the
old Oregon trail, and
many of the early
travelers of that
historic highway have
left excellent
descriptions of their
journey. Several fine
records of the
California trail, or the
old Fort Hall road have
also been preserved; but
nothing has yet been
published which deals
directly with the
Hastings Cutoff, the
most dangerous stretch
of desert trail between
Independence, Missouri
and the Pacific. Living
near the mysterious
Great Salt Desert, I
became interested in the
history of the Donner
party, which met
disaster there in 1846.
In searching for
information concerning
this famous party of
emigrants, I discovered
that there had been
several other crossings
of the great desert both
before and after 1846.
The fragmentary records
of these different
expeditions, pieced
together, to make such
an interesting record of
early travel over this
little known route, that
I have brought them all
together in this book,
hoping that this
information may prove of
interest and value to
students of pioneer
history. The story is as
complete as I have been
able to make it, but
doubtless there are
other documents
preserved among
treasured family records
which would bring to
light new and
interesting facts, and
the readers of this book
are asked to cooperate
with me in collecting in
one volume all
historical information
which bears upon early
emigration over the
Hastings Cutoff. Charles

Hardbound With A Dust

Index. From The Back Of
The Dust Jacket: The
story of the Mormon
pioneers has been told
many times. The saga of
that historic trek
across the plains in
1847 is comparatively
well-known, but very few
are familiar with the
tragic trip across Iowa.
This notable and
inspiring book is
devoted largely to that
epic march from Nauvoo
to the Missouri. It is
filled with human
interest stories that
will make the reader
pioneer-conscious and
give one a greater
appreciation of the
sacrifices and
achievements of the
Mormon pioneers. It
contains a wealth of
valuable information
never assembled before.
Page after page
challenges attention as
the story unfolds: the
spirit of merriment and
festivity that was
present along the trail
and in temporary
settlements – Garden
Grove, Mt. Pisgah, and
Winter Quarters – and
the hardships and deaths
along the trail. The
historical background of
the exodus in its
relation to national and
international events;
the sacred flight from
Nauvoo; the good ship
Brooklyn; the Mormon
Battalion; the historic
trek across the plains
and mountains, by
ox-team and handcarts –
all combine to make this
one of the most
thrilling and important
books ever written about
the Mormon Pioneers.
This book is in very
good condition with a
dust jacket. It is clean
and tight with no
marking or underlining.
It is missing a front
endpaper. The dust
jacket is in very good
condition. It is in a
dust jacket protector.

BIBLIOGRAPHY. Frederick
Benteen Frederick
William Benteen was a
military officer during
the American Civil War
and then during the
Black Hills War against
the Lakota and Northern
Cheyenne. He was in
command of a battalion
of the 7th U. S. Cavalry
at the Battle of the
Little Bighorn. During
the Little Bighorn
("Sioux") expedition in
1876, under Lt. Col.
George Armstrong Custer,
Benteen commanded
Company H. Approximately
12 miles from the Little
Bighorn River, he was
assigned command of a
battalion comprising
Company H, Company D,
and Company K. Although
Custer was uncertain of
the exact location of
the Indians, he assigned
Benteen the task of
containing the left
flank. Benteen searched
fruitlessly through
rough ground for some
two hours before
returning to the trail
of the main column. As
he advanced toward the
river, he was met by
first one messenger from
Custer, and then
another, indicating that
a big village had been
found, and that he
should "come on..be
quick..". When Benteen
reached a point
overlooking the river,
he found the battalion
commanded by Major
Marcus Reno. it had been
driven away from the
village, across the
river and up the bluffs.
Instead of continuing on
in search of Custer,
Benteen joined Reno’s
force. Within a few
minutes, loud firing to
the north was heard by
almost all the men on
the bluffs. These
volleys signified that
Custer was heavily
engaged. Nonetheless,
the combined force
waited for the arrival
of the packtrain before
an organized advance was
made toward the sound of
the guns. After a march
of less than a mile, a
vantage point now called
Weir Point was reached,
from which (as it later
was learned) the last
moments of the Custer
fight could be seen. The
Lakota and Cheyenne who
had destroyed Custer’s
battalion then turned
their attention to Reno
and Benteen, driving
them back to a defensive
position now called the
"Reno-Benteen defense
site", a
horseshoe-shaped
perimeter on the bluffs
near where Reno and
Benteen had met. Over
the next 24 hours,
Benteen assumed
functional command. He
led two charges which
drove the Indians back
just as it seemed the
perimeter would be
overrun. Benteen was
wounded in the thumb,
and the heel was shot
off one of his boots.
Benteen was later
criticized for his slow
travel between the time
he was sent off to the
left and the time he
reached the bluffs
overlooking the river.
His decision to join
Reno, rather than
continuing on toward
Custer, has also been
questioned. Benteen
participated in the Nez
Perce campaign in 1877,
later being brevetted
brigadier general for
his actions at the
Canyon Creek fight of
that war, as well as for
his actions at the
Little Bighorn. He
testified at the Reno
Court of Inquiry in 1879
in Chicago. He was
appointed Major, 9th
U.S. Cavalry, in
December of 1882. In
1887, h. Bookseller

Introductory Note: Few
people realize the
important part the early
pioneers of Utah have
played in the
development of the drama
and theatre. Many
interesting facts have
been hidden away in old
newspapers, diaries,
journals and playbills.
It has been a pleasant
task to search out these
facts and give them to
the people of Utah that
they may understand and
appreciate their
dramatic heritage. The
author’s hope for this
little volume is that it
may give added pleasure
and knowledge to
students of drama
history, and that it may
preserve one of the most
interesting phases of
Utah history. This study
covers the history of
the theatre in Salt Lake
City from its beginning
in 1850, to the coming
of the railroad in 1870.
This book is in very
good condition. It is
clean and tight with no

Leonard J. Arrington -

L. May During the
nineteenth century the
Latter-Day Saints
engaged in a series of
economic enterprises
that were unique for
that time. Most
prominent of these was
the United Order, a bold
experiment in economic
idealism initiated by
Brigham Young on a
regionwide scale in
1874. Though its
immediate effects were
short-lived, it remains
a powerful symbol for
Latter-Day Saints, a
vivid expression of the
reform impulse that has
been a recurring aspect
of Mormonism since its
founding. This book is
in very good condition
with a dust jacket. Dust
jacket shows minor
wear.KEYWORDS: Mormon
