Pages. "The records
of the past, guide
your steps to the
future. Men and
women in all walks
of life, through
tireless effort,
have set the
patterns which have
become our true
traditions. Out of
these discoveries,
inventions, and
social experiences,
came our culture.
Without the starting
point provided by
the before-mentioned
traditions,
development would be
inconceivable. Our
culture rests upon
the preservation of
the accomplishments
of all who have gone
before us in
contributing the
building of this
common wealth. But
the culture of
tomorrow depends on
what we of today add
to that heritage in
the way of thinking,
habits and customs."

is a fascinating
book about the
history of the Salt
Lake valley. From a
trail through the
mountains to what is
today – a major
interstate highway
I-80. There is a lot
of very interesting
information in this
book along with many
old photographs that
gives the reader a
sense of how the
area looked long
ago. Also, in the
back of the book is
page after page of
plants and animals
natural to the area.
Most of these have
black and white
illustrations to go
along with them.
This book presents
the history of the
discovery and
development of
Parley's Canyon,
named after Mormon
Church apostle and
scriptorian Parley
P. Pratt. DISCOVERY:
Parley P. Pratt,
born April 12, 1807,
discovered what is
now the eastern
gateway to the Salt
Lake Valley:
Parley's Hollow at
the base of Parley's
Canyon. This book is

This is a story of a
third generation
member of Brigham
Young's family. He
was a careless and
somewhat wayward
youth. He went on to
live more than forty
years of his adult
life away from the
programs and
spiritual influences
of his people,
including those
advantages that
pertain to a
continuous

knowledge so
necessary to
spiritual

comes through the

the spirit of
repentance. This

Prophet Joseph Smith
instructed the
Elders that each
should keep a daily
journal, "for," said
he, "your journals
will be sought after
as history and as
scripture. This is
the way the New
Testament came, what
we have of it,
through much of the
matter there was
written by the
Apostles from their
memory of what had
been done, because
they were not prompt
in keeping daily
journals." (Young
Woman’s Journal,
Vol. 2 page 466)
Brigham Young’s
journal has become
one of the most
"sought after."
Apparently Brigham
Young began keeping
a daily journal
early in the year of
1839, for regular
entries in his
journal do not
appear until that
time. About the same
time he wrote a
short history of his
life which he then
inserted in front of
his daily journal.
Dated and
particularly
detailed entries,
made for example for
those periods of
time involving the
Zion’s Camp march
and several of his
early missions,
indicate that either
he had kept some
records of the
important events in
his life or he had
access to records
kept by associates
during those times.
In 1845 Brigham
Young prefaced his
History with a brief
life sketch of his
parents and each of
his brothers and
sisters. This
history was
published serially
in the Millennial
Star, beginning with
Volume 25, No. 19
(Saturday, May 9,
1863) and continuing
through the greater
part of Volume 26.
Earl Olsen,
Assistant Church
Historian, has
informed the writer
that some few
entries, possibly
through an oversight
in the original
printing, were
omitted. No attempt
has been made in
this volume to
locate the missing
entries, This volume
is a reprint in book
form of the
Manuscript History
of Brigham Young as
published in Volumes
25 and 26 of the
Millennial Star. The
last entry in this
volume is dated
August 8, 1844. The
Manuscript History
of Brigham Young
from August 9, 1844
to February 28, 1846
has been published
by the Church of
Jesus Christ of
Latter-Day Saints in
Documentary History
of the Church,
Volume 7, pages
247-603. A
comprehensive index
and concordance has
been made through
the use of the
University of Utah
computer. With the
index, this History
becomes a readily
available source for
much valuable
information
concerning the early
history of the
Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-Day
Saints. – Elden J.
Watson October 21,
1968. Appendix: "The
following two
letters are
keepsakes of the
Curtis family and
with the kind
permission of Dr.
Lindsay R. Curtis
they are reproduced
here. These letters
were written by
Brigham Young
shortly after his
return to Nauvoo and
were sent to his
daughter, Vilate, in
Salem,
Massachusetts. The
first letter is
historically
significant,
providing both a
description of
Brigham Young’s
journey from Boston
to Nauvoo and an
important insight
into events which
occurred shortly
after his arrival at
Nauvoo, together
with his personal
feelings concerning
them. The second
letter, although
less significant, is
a sequel to the
first and appears
here for the first
time in print. These
two letters form a
fitting conclusion
to this portion of
the Manuscript
History of Brigham
Young." KEYWORDS:

120 Pages. From The
Back Cover: In this
fascinating and
long-awaited book,
noted author George
Thompson tells the
real story of the
lost Rhoades gold
mine as well as the
tales of many other
lost and forgotten
mines and treasures
in Utah’s mountains
– "killer
mountains,"
according to the
author, because so
many prospectors and
treasure hunters
have met untimely
and mysterious
deaths there. Here
in this book for the
first time ever are
published drawings
of old treasure
hunters’ maps as
well as clues and
other information
that the author has
gathered in decades
of researching and
searching for Utah’s
lost treasures. In
this book can be
found information
that is even
unavailable in
Footprints In The
Wilderness, the book
many use in there
search for the lost
Rhoads mine. Faded
Footprints now
amplifies and
clarifies much of
that earlier book.
For example Thompson
writes: "In his
Footprints In The
Wilderness, Gale
Rhoades described a
map which he called
the Mine In Timber
Map, but he declined
to publish a copy of
it. It is revealed
here for the first
time The author also
presents compelling
evidence, including
photographs, of the
presence of Spanish
miners in Utah
mountains at least
200 years before the
arrival of the first
Mormons. It is their
mines and treasure
caches of long ago
that have lured
adventurers and
treasure seekers
ever since –
rewarding some with
riches and others
with death! This
book is a must for
every treasure
hunter’s bookshelf,
as well as being a
rich treasure trove
of information for
all those interested
in Utah history and
mining. This book is
in very good
condition. It is
clean and tight with
no marking or

shows some minor
shelf wear.
